“La Literaria”, emblematic building located in the center of University of Deusto in Bilbao, it’s been reformed by ACXT studio within the framework of the Strategic Plan 2011-2014 to achieve professional excellence. The design was intended to respect and and enhance the qualities of the original building created by Francisco de Cubas and declared a monument of cultural interest.

The exterior has been kept as it was without changes practically, being the inside where there’s been most of the renovation. The restoration of the galleries on the noble floors, as a fundamental element of reference, it’s been coupled with the symbolic nature of the space of the cloisters and the semi-interior space, achieved by the construction of two new ceilings covering the courtyard.

Diego Rodríguez Segura has been the main architect and the renovation was started on 2011 and ended on 2012. This building it’s nowadays the new nerve centre of University life on the campus of Duesto, besides of being one of the jewels of Bilbao’s architecture.

SECTOR CHALLENGES

Francisco Martinez-Cosentino, President of the Cosentino Group, was in charge of the State of the Kitchen and Bath Industry conference. KBIS 2014 took place since 4th until 6th February in Las Vegas. This was the first time that a Spanish speaker took over the conference and did it in his own language.

Martínez-Cosentino believes that the biggest challenge facing the kitchen and bath industry this year “lies in continuously meeting demand for innovative products that address the ever-evolving needs of the market. To do that, successful manufacturers need to connect with and understand their customers, and deliver products that meet their needs. Furthermore, these products must reflect global design and technology trends, while remaining cognizant of global economic and increased competition”.

The company presents in this edition of the fair its brand Essentia and keeps innovating in the decoration sector. Petra is the series which releases this new catalogue, a composition in different tonalities of natural stone in the Splitface surface, available in 10×40 cm format. The company also presented two series in mosaic; both of them had a great reception from the public.

ZCD Architects

This project involved the complete refurbishment and extension of a late 1960’s 3-storey terraced townhouse. The brief from the client was to create a large and special family home. Being practising Buddists, one specific requirement was the careful consideration and positioning of the Butsudan within the house. ZCD Architects felt needed to be at the heart of the house, so much of the internal remodelling was centred around this, as well as considering the connections between new and existing volumes at ground floor and lots of natural light.

Products of excellence

To satisfy the demands of the new lifestyles centred on the bath as a place of intimate well-being and wellness, Margraf proposes design solutions that put marble, a natural and eternal stone, at the centre of aesthetic and functional research in a private residence, in a public environment or in a hotel. The bathtubs, the shower trays, the suspended washbasins, as well as those above the counter, recessed or self-standing with an integrated column, of varied shapes and dimensions from the Vicenza Company, create a magical atmosphere and give a touch of unquestioned refinement, in harmony with nature and in respect of the environment.

Margraf proposes not only exclusive products of excellence, but also a vast range of solutions, from the floors to the wall coverings, up to an full service of consultancy, indispensable instruments, today, in quality building.

Margraf marbles skilfully worked by the Company’s specialised craftsmen, integrate themselves perfectly with the sanitary fixtures in porcelain and the most innovative faucet fittings thanks to their forms which can be personalised and to the different kinds of colours and finishes; they can also be used in combination with other materials, such as wood, to make the bathroom a unique and personalised environment.

The flooring and the wall covering in honed Chocolate linked to the shower plate in  honed Granada Beige from the Quadra collection, is suitable for those who seek that extra touch in the wellness zone; the free standing bath in Veselye Fiorito of the Gaia collection dominates the bath environment like a sculpture, granting it a touch of class.

NEW KITCHEN'S CONCEPT

Where once there was only a conventional kitchen, cabinet maker and photographer Denis Margot created a meeting point and a meeting with Alexandra Flament’s family, the owner of a villa in almost a century old on the outskirts of Brussels. In this reform, HI-MACS ® was instrumental in giving a new dimension to the room and give it bright and airy.

Planning the transformation of hexagonal kitchen in which it was impossible to install cabinets by the presence of openings (windows and doors) in all its walls, became a challenge that led to the project Swedish Spirit. To overcome Margot and Alexandra Denis Flament resorted to HI-MACS ® material of last generation, being highly malleable and versatile, removes barriers to creative matter and allowed the manufacture of furniture.

In turn, the union without visible joints, allowing you to create monolithic structures, and porosity of the material does not preclude the penetration of liquids and facilitate cleaning. «We chose HI-MACS ® for its quality, durability and hygienic properties,» explains Denis Margot.

Alexandra Flament wanted to stay not only has a large cooking surface but also became a meeting place for family and friends to organize meetings. To create this atmosphere, a central island with a countertop was installed made of HI-MACS ®. This material contains no toxic substances, is ideal for food contact. In addition, the acrylic stone insulates heat and is resistant to commonly disinfectants products used in a household.

In order to give scope to the room, the light acquired a leading role in the reform. So we chose to incorporate large windows to two meters high which, when opened, create the feeling of being on the outside of the house, just a step from nature. The pure white finish Alpine White enhances brightness of this space.

At these large windows sills, also made by HI-MACS ®, has been integrated LED lights that help them to maintain the warmth of overnight stay. The tops of furniture located below the window and made of acrylic stone completes this elegant and minimalist kitchen of this villa from the 20s.

ASIAN RAILWAY

To date, ThyssenKrupp Elevator has sold more than 7,000 units of passenger transportation equipment, and services over 2,600 units related to metro and rail infrastructure projects across the Asia Pacific region. The company is poised for continued growth in tandem with the area’s boom in building metro and railway lines.

In the last decade, the construction of metro systems and rail networks in the Asia Pacific region has kept pace with the area’s unprecedented urbanization. With China leading the way, public rail transportation across Asia is rising to world-class standards as countries including Korea, Thailand and India focus on investing in their cities’ infrastructure.

ThyssenKrupp is seizing this momentum and has been on a fast track of expanding its business in this thriving market segment. To date, the company has sold more than 7,000 units of passenger transportation equipment, including elevators, escalators, and moving walks, to metro and railway projects across more than 21 Asian cities. ThyssenKrupp Elevator branches are also servicing over 2,600 units installed in metro and railway systems in the area.

Escalators at Metro Line 9, Seoul, Korea

“With mega as well as medium-sized cities across the Asia Pacific region vying to construct rail systems and alleviate their cities’ traffic congestion, we expect continued growth in this dynamic market segment,” said Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG.

Since elevator and escalator access to train platforms is now indispensable for providing commuter convenience, ThyssenKrupp has successfully captured a substantial share of this rail transit market segment. The company is able to provide the safest and most reliable solutions and services designed for rail systems, as illustrated by its 65 escalators in stations of Beijing Metro Line 15 operating at an amazing 99.99 percent availability rate in 2013.

China – leader of the Asian boom

When all metro projects approved by the government are built, a total of 38 Chinese cities will have at least one rail line by the year 2020. Currently, more than 180 Chinese cities have 1 million inhabitants. It has been estimated that by 2025 this figures will increase to over 240 so that there is huge further potential for infrastructure projects.

ThyssenKrupp Elevator has supplied approximately 1,000 transportation units across Beijing’s metro system, which has come a long way since subway construction began there in 1965.

The metro network in China’s capital city has now grown to 17 lines, carrying over 10 million passengers on an average weekday. During rush hour, trains run at an impressive interval of just over 2 minutes.

The latest order ThyssenKrupp secured from Beijing Metro is for the supply of 329 heavy-duty escalators to Line 14. The company is the exclusive escalator supplier to this entire line, and the new installation is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.

TKE Shenzhen North Station_02

In Chongqing, an important transport hub positioned at the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers in outhwest China, ThyssenKrupp Elevator has provided the city‘s metro system with about 800 units of transportation equipment. Chongqing municipality has a population of approximately 30 million and a surface area comparable with the whole of Austria. The city’s first metro line opened in 2004, and a network of up to 18 lines is in the pipeline.

The company’s recent contract to supply the Shenzhen Metro with 137 escalators brings its total number of passenger transportation units in this southern city’s metro network to 888. The 137 escalators will be installed in 16 stations along Shenzhen Metro Line 7, which extends to 28 stations and 30.2 km, connecting densely populated residential communities with urban commercial and business districts. The installation is scheduled for completion by December 2016.

Last year, Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation awarded ThyssenKrupp its second major order, to supply 74 escalators for the Shatin to Central Link metro line. This follows a contract awarded two years ago for the supply of 71 escalators and 8 moving walks at the West Kowloon terminus of the Express Rail line, with a total area of over 380,000 square meters even larger than most airport terminals.

Thailand – 500 km of new rails

Although Bangkok already has an extensive public transit system consisting of the BTS SkyTrain network, the MRT with elevated and underground lines, as well as a dedicated Airport Rail Link, the city is continuing to expand its rail transit network to a length of approximately 500 km (more than 300 miles), in order to alleviate its congested road traffic.

ThyssenKrupp completed its first escalator installation for the SkyTrain in 1999, and the Thai capital’s rail transit operators have, to date, ordered more than 600 units of the company’s elevators, escalators, moving walks, and platform lifts.

Korea – 40% of its inhabitants travel by public transportation

In South Korea’s capital, daily passenger numbers in the subway system have grown from 230,000 when the first line opened in 1974, to the current 4 million, accounting for about 40 percent of Seoul’s 10 million inhabitants. During the 1990s, Seoul embarked on a dedicated project to expand its subway network, resulting in additional lines and over 160 km (almost 100 miles) of new rail track. ThyssenKrupp’s elevators and escalators have gained a significant presence in the city’s rail transport network, with 275 units installed along a single line – Seoul’s Metro Line 9. The company has also recently renewed its five-year service contract for these units.

Urbanization will foster future growth

By 2050, urban populations will account for nearly 70% of the global total, meaning that there will be a 2.5 billion increase in the number of city inhabitants, with the vast majority of growth expected in Africa, South America, and Asia. As the move to cities increases at this rapid pace, efficient urban planning and infrastructure development are key factors in ensuring successful urbanization. Leading global companies like ThyssenKrupp are investing in the development of new technologies to contribute to the elevation of urban mobility to new levels.

FURNITURE AND DESIGN

Fiam is a leading company in the production and distribution of high quality outdoor furniture with a particular eye on design and functionality, merging simplicity and comfort.

This year, Fiam celebrates its 40th anniversary presenting at the spoga + gafa trade fair in Cologne iconic pieces of its collection, ever since featuring distinctive characteristics such as durability, comfort and pureness in design. Alongside with bestsellers such as Bitter, Fiesta, Amigo, Samba and Movida, the company presents Lido, a product novelty in 2015, designed by Torsteinsen Design from Norway.

Fiam thus consolidates an important value that has driven the company in the 40 years of its history: substantial design. Since the very beginning, in fact, all furniture items have been crafted in the Fiam laboratories with the will to create designs serving the very function of the furniture piece. Just like the masters of the Italian and International design scene used to do.

“It was the desire to make, create and innovate that prompted me to develop the first products and to establish Fiam. I’m happy that this insight has paid off with the success we are celebrating today: reaching the important milestone of its fortieth anniversary. Several times throughout its history, Fiam has shown that the originality of models and technical solutions is a winning asset and I’m certain that our design philosophy — based on pragmatism, functionality and quality — will allow us to reap many more rewards in the future, even in an increasingly competitive international market.” says Francesco Favagrossa, Fiam’s founder.

ARCHITECTURE

We now show The Panda House, a major project of DA-LAB Architects and for more information on this work let us explain its author.

FROM THE ARCHITECT

“Our top priority was to keep the spirit of the existing house, which was more than 20 years old and was designed in an exaggerated way. It had ample passages, oversized bathrooms and lacked many basic spaces for a beach house of its size”, says the architect.

The project has an air of minimalism combined with classic elements of a rustic beach house that give a sense of harmony and peace to every environment.

DOUBLE HEIGHT

“We call the double height space ‘the soul of the house’. It recognizes the pre-existent structure and serves as an organizing element and spacial connector of all common areas”, explains.

REED

The false ceiling cane plant generates a welcome shade throughout the day. At night the indirect lighting details scattered throughout the house enhance this natural element as “mother” of the project.

THE FACADE

Finally, he says that “the live facade made with sliding blinds that move across the front allows you to create shadows where they are required. When not in use they rest in front of the columns generating an antigravitational effect that gives you the feeling that the roof floats with no supports”.

The house, which originally had only one story, now has two storys and has won 2 extra rooms, a TV room, a bar, a BBQ bar, a pool and a large family terrace to have lunch and rest overlooking the sea.
